Flat Bat Baseball – FAQ & Buying Guide

1. How do you make a flat baseball bat?

Our Hammer flat bats are modified cricket bats where for example- a 30 inch bat's weight is reduced from 33 oz to around 20 oz so it's like a baseball bat, by removing wood from unnecessary areas like near the handle, as this part of the bat is not used to hit the ball in baseball. They are designed to be ready to use straight out of the box. These bats are made of 2 pieces- the barrel which is joined with a handle made from wood slats interspersed with rubber for shock absorption.

The Original Flat Bats are designed and made completely differently. We make the barrels that are flat on one side and round on the other and the handles separately. The unique handle design allows you to hit real baseballs without a 'sting' as it absorbs the shock that a 1 piece bat couldn't.

We did this because cutting down a baseball bat makes it weak and not strong enough to hit real baseballs and the sting on the handle from hitting would be too much to handle for most (We tried it!). On the other hand, cricket bats are too heavy to use for baseball.

2. Why is a flat baseball bat used in training?
A flat baseball bat for training helps hitters improve their hand-eye coordination and make solid contact with every pitch. Coaches love using the Flat Bat Baseball Bat in hitting drills because it instantly corrects rollovers. It’s one of the most effective training tools for players who want to consistently square up the ball.

3. What is a flat bat drill for baseball?
A flat bat drill for baseball focuses on hitting line drives with precision off a tee or in soft or machine toss. Most baseball batting drills can be done with flat bats too. There is also a fun game based drill that you can play to make the most use of flat bats.

4. What makes a flat bat different from a regular baseball bat?
A regular bat has a round barrel which makes it hard to determine why a ball ended up going someplace unexpected- but a Flat Bat Baseball Bat has a flat side that forces cleaner, more centered contact. Players using a flat-faced bat quickly notice better bat control and fewer mishits. It’s perfect for both competitive play and training.

5. What is a baseball bat with a flat top or flat end called?
That’s known as a flat-barrel or flat-faced baseball bat - that we've settled on calling Flat Bat (for) Baseball. The flat end helps hitters visualize their swing path and stay through the ball. You can find official Flat Bat Baseball Bats in various sizes on our shop page.

6. Can I make a DIY flat baseball bat at home?
Yes. You can buy a cricket bat and customize it yourself, but it’s tricky to find the right bat, at a good price (cricket bats are 2-3 times the cost of a baseball bat due to the labor involved in making it), know how to break it in, and to cut, plane and sand it to get the balance and weight right. If you want to actually train or compete, it’s better to invest in a professionally crafted Flat Bat Baseball Bat - designed specifically for the sport, durable, and tournament-ready.
